Hard Differential Equation
  • Hi. I gave MathStudio a fairly difficult differential equation to solve as a test case and sure enough, MathStudio was unable to solve it. The equation was: Y'+Y^2+(2X+1)Y+x^2+X+1=0 with y(0)=1 which has the solution: y=(2xe^x-x-1)/(1-2e^x). Do you guys continually upgrade the analytic capabilities of MathStudio such that in the future it may be able to solve such problems or is it likely that such problems will remain unsolvable by MathStudio. Even if it cannot solve the hardest problems, MathStudio is still extremely capable. Thanks.
  • We don't develop the analytic capabilities of MathStudio as much as the interface these days, so an upgrade that handles this case is probably not going to happen soon.

    Most of the code that would be able to solve this equation, e.g., DSolve, I believe is written in MathStudio code, so it is possible to include these cases. We'll keep this examples in mind when we do expand the capabilities.

    To add my two cents...

    There's quite a number of good looking easy-to-use calculators in the app store. The edge MS has over practically all of them - or the USP speaking in economics lingo - is it's math engine (MobileCAS, isn't it?) because it lets you do loads of things other calculator apps simply can't do.

    This is why I'd like to suggest to lay a good piece of focus on developing and bugfixing that part of MS further where you can't be "copied" easily... your math engine!

  • Must agree with trichie on this one. I keep finding these bugs or odd behavior in different parts of the inner workings the MobileCas, that just isn't there with solutions by Texas instruments or Wolfram. However none of these have a mobile version. UI is pretty good enough as is, I find it less appealing having to deal with inputting a qirky equation that WolframAplha eats raw, than having to search for a specific button 1 sec longer.
