Unless things have changed, that hasn't been my experience. No packages that haven't especially been ported for them will build.
Obviously, the really portable languages have no problem (perl, python, ruby, java, bash) but c with dependencies would likely be a headache.
you may be right, but I think the whole draw of this system (speaking only for myself) is its availability for the pocket pc. lash me to a desktop, and it will be Linux or BSD and there I've got lots of options, Maxima probably will be the one I'll focus on. Space Time would be a tough sell to either the Linux or BSD communities as there are so many free options as far as CAS goes. For a Q&D peek at a graph, I use graphmonkey. I will (did) pay to have this software on a device I can put in my pocket (IPAQ 210). I would not pay to put it on my Debian box.
The iPhone version is right around the corner and I'm keeping an eye on the new Android platform which is Linux based.
